This work is a study of the South African liberation movements that struggled against apartheid and racial segregation during the twentieth century. The main objective is to pose a reflexion on the processes of symbolic construction through which these movements passed in order to understand them as producers of their own collective identities. Thus, it is proposed that this identity construction revolved around three main axes. First, there was multiracialism, originating in the partnership between different political organizations linked to different racial groups, which sought to build a common solidarity from the experience of struggling together during protest campaigns in the 1950s. Secondly there is the notion of blackness, an element emphasized by Africanist movements from the 1940s on. Finally, the class was present since the formation of the first black trade unions in the 1920s, but took on a more political tone thirty years later, during the rise of the struggle for liberation. It is also argumented that the interactive dimension of these groups as collective subjectivities was crucial to the delineation of their identities, something made possible by complex relational and symbolic exchanges between the social movements themselves and the state.
