Resumo: This thesis-scope research has the main objective of reflecting on the meaning effects of sexist language in popular and non-terminological names for the vulva and the penis through the study of conceptual metaphors (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; KOVECESES, 2005 2006, 2007, 2010) underlying linguistic manifestations with the potential to trigger laughter. In addition, we seek to discuss how this metonymic and metaphorical popular nomenclature underlines social representations of gender from the use of playfulness as a way of masking ideological markings about the positions of women and men in the social sphere, thus permeating the relationships established between ideology, culture, metaphorizations – conceptual and linguistic –, sexist language and laughter. For this purpose, the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics is used (FILLMORE, 1975, 1982,1985; GEERAERTS, 2006; LAKOFF, 1987; LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1987; KÖVECSES, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010), in order to combine several related postulates to human cognition and that include social and corporeal experiences in their meaning effects of the world. Methodologically, this study is characterized as research with a quali-quantitative and interpretive focus (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2008; SACCOL, 2009), based, in parallel, on corpus-based research (MITTELBERG; FARMER; WAUGH, 2007) and a lexical approach (KÖVECSES, 2019), enabling the organization and categorization of approximately 4,672 linguistic data. In this sense, the use of online dictionaries, such as the dictionaries ‘Priberam’, ‘Dicio’ and ‘Dicionário Informal’, exhibitors of the different uses of linguistic expressions, as a methodological procedure, became essential for this research by enabling the identification, categorization and organization of conceptual metaphors for the formation of the corpus of analysis. The study pointed out that conceptual metaphors result from conceptual compatibilities not only related to objects, food/beverages, entities and people, but also to social practices of different natures, pointing to a figurative and representational characteristic of the use of metaphor. Through this analysis, it was possible to visualize, via the naming of their sexual organs, the subordination of the female condition to the male effigy, and the condition of virility and potentiality of the male figure based on nominations limited to humor. We believe that, given the naturalness of certain metaphors rooted in the social environment, the identification of sexist language becomes more difficult to identify, especially when frames are manipulated to violate linguistic restrictions and the consequent incursion of laughter. However, the study of metaphor processing and other cognitive devices for the conceptualization of language allows the visualization of the ideological dispositions underlying the burlesque designations for sexual organs, providing clues as to the social roles assumed by Brazilian sociocultural actors

However, the study of metaphor processing and other cognitive devices for the conceptualization of language allows the visualization of the ideological dispositions underlying the burlesque designations for sexual organs, providing clues as to the social roles assumed by Brazilian sociocultural actorsEsta pesquisa em escopo de tese tem por objetivo principal refletir sobre os efeitos de sentido de uma linguagem sexista em nomes populares e não terminológicos para a vulva e o pênis por meio do estudo das metáforas conceptuais (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; KÖVECESES, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010) subjacentes a manifestações linguísticas com potencialidades para o despertamento do riso. Porém, o estudo do processamento da metáfora e de outros dispositivos cognitivos para a conceptualização da linguagem permite a visualização das disposições ideológicas subjacentes a designações burlescas para órgãos sexuais, fornecendo indícios quanto aos papéis sociais assumidos por atores socioculturais brasileirosSubmitted by Helio CEH/B (hagoncalves137@yahoo.com.br) on 2023-06-29T21:23:53Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese - Patrícia Oliveira de Freitas - 2023 - Completa.pdf: 2430992 bytes, checksum: 116cbc982aac98e6941e0215fff001a5 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2023-06-29T21:23:53Z (GMT). description This thesis-scope research has the main objective of reflecting on the meaning effects of sexist language in popular and non-terminological names for the vulva and the penis through the study of conceptual metaphors (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; KOVECESES, 2005 2006, 2007, 2010) underlying linguistic manifestations with the potential to trigger laughter.
