This thesis investigates the relationship between design and anthropology through the experience of a designer with a group of residents interested in reducing violence in the neighborhood of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. Firstly, based on the research for a master´s degree, in which the artifacts produced and conceived by non-designers of the streets of Belo Horizonte were analyzed, a gradual approach was made with authors of anthropology and design who value the work and knowledge of non-designers. As a second moment, an engagement was identified with the Santa without Violence Collective (SWVC) organized by residents of the neighborhood of Santa Teresa of Rio de Janeiro who were worried about the increase of violence in the area. Throughout the field research multiple activities were carried out that we can classify as: data collection and an active participation in the meetings and activities carried out by the CSSV at public spaces. After almost a year of working together with the members of the Collective, the data was analyzed in the light of the approaches from design and anthropology research. From the point of view of design certain topics stand out, such as: Design Anthropology, Participatory Design, Adversarial Design and Design Activism. From the point of view of anthropology: hope, correspondence and autonomy. This analysis allowed reflections that could serve as a basis for future engagements between designers and communities.
