Resumo: This dissertation assessed the prevalence of “Successful Aging” (SA) in the elderly, as well as certain associated modifiable factors. The study population consisted of people aged 60 years or more who participated in a nationally representative survey, the National Health Survey-2013 (n = 11.177). The elderly were considered to have SA, according to the biomedical model proposed by Rowe and Kahn, when they were simultaneously positive in the following criteria: self-perceived health as good or very good, absence of disability and good physical and cognitive performance. In article I, the prevalence of SA was evaluated according to sociodemographic variables and region of residence (macroregions; urban/rural). The overall prevalence of SA was 34.9%, high among men (38.4%), residents of urban areas (36.9%), with more years of education (65.5%) and residents of regions socioeconomically favored in Brazil (central-south and southeast of the country). The subgroup with the highest prevalence of SA were the elderly aged 60-69 years (41.7%), living in the Southeast region (40.4%). In article II, the factors associated with the presence of EBS were investigated through logistic regression. The associated factors were absence of depression (OR = 4.62; 95% CI 4.01 to 5.35), moderate use of alcohol (OR = 1.25; 95% CI 1.05-1.49), residing in the Southeast region of Brazil (OR = 1.72; 95% CI 1.51-1.97), practice leisure physical activity (OR = 2.10; 95% CI 1.86 - 2.37), have a social support network (OR = 1.35; 95% CI 1.18-1.55) and aged between 60-74 years (OR = 4.13; 95% CI 3.18-5.44). Differences were found in the prevalence of SA among people living in different regions and among those with a higher level of education, indicating probable changes in inequalities related to the region where elderly Brazilians live. This was the first study and analysis of factors associated with SA in a nationally based research, thus, this dissertation contributes to the understanding of the role of modifiable behavior and habits in aging, in addition to being able to guide the direction of health promotion policies, focusing on the lifestyle of elderly.

Submitted by Marcia CB/C (marciagraziadio@yahoo.com.br) on 2022-05-06T16:07:56Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Juliany Pereira do Espírito Santo - 2021 - Parcial.pdf: 730452 bytes, checksum: 59278381c31d6a17128a51ce22262df3 (MD5) Dissertação - Juliany Pereira do Espírito Santo - 2021 - Completa.pdf: 1304444 bytes, checksum: eeeb058d5015c2be4a86844fa8066c5f (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-05-06T16:07:56Z (GMT).
