The tradition of political participation of the student movement of Colégio Pedro II has recently been marked by feminist and LGBT expressions which constitute significant changes related to the construction of gender and sexuality demands, to the problematization of situations of oppression in the school environment and to the creation of new forms of political organization – such as collectives and fronts – indicating a process of inscribing difference with important shifts of the collective subject. This process follows a broader movement in favor of democratic access to the institution through the policy of quotas and important institutional changes, such as the end of gender binarity in uniforms and the end of jubilamento (compulsory expelling of students who have failed more than two consecutive school years). Moreover, this process is part of a political conjuncture of intense democratic disputes that characterizes the period in a national level. The documentary research draws on the written student press produced by MECPII since the 1980s. The data generation is also carried out through social media that have become the primary means of communication of the collective subject in the last decade as well as through group interviews held in 2019 at Niterói, São Cristóvão II and São Cristóvão III campi. We approach the processes of student identification in the institution by investigating four interrelated aspects: 1) the tradition of student political participation at CPII; 2) the power relations in the school environment; 3) the student identifications in the institution and 4) the difference in school space-time. Problematizing the meanings of tradition assumed in the institutional discourse, the trajectory of the MECPII’s permanence allows us to approach tradition as a heritage that, assumed by the subjects in the present time, contributes to the construction of student political participation and constitutes the processing of this collective subject.
