In this research we demonstrate, how throughout history, forms and perceptions of nature, conditioned occupation, defined functions and influenced the construction of landscapes in Petrópolis RJ. We opted for a qualitative exploratory research. Techniques used: bibliographic and documentary research; reading of images (paintings, lithographs, photographs, drawings); photographic production and landscape observation. The thesis is based on the environmental history, with a spatiotemporal approach in which the materializations in the landscape of the socio-spatial processes established in the past and which conditioned the current process were observed. As a method of geographic space analysis, the categories form, function, structure and process were used. It was concluded that the city of Petrópolis was born obeying a state project. That the union of Enlightenment thinking with the German romanticism of the planning engineer conditioned the environmental future of the city. That the physical aspects of nature and the economic structure prevailing at each historical moment were determinant for the different functions attributed to the form. That the relationship between man and nature in the history of Petrópolis was characterized by evolutionary movements, stagnation and setbacks, where the need for space and the idea of nature influenced the artificialization and impact of the natural environment, conditioning forms and functions in a constant process of landscape transformation.
