The idea of nature permeates the entire History of Geographical Thought, either as an object of research or as a social imaginary in general (which is also an object of research). In this sense, this work sought to demonstrate its importance in geographic science and how this idea is experienced by people, from its (re) elaboration in situations of natural disasters. Thus, we focused on the specific case of the tragedy that occurred in January 2011 in the municipality of Nova Friburgo-RJ, through interviews with residents of one of the most affected areas, the Córrego D'Antas neighborhood, seeking to reveal these ways of thinking nature and the environment in the post-tragedy and based conceptually on the notions of place, landscape, social facts (representations) and environmental perception. For this purpose, the levels of analysis of the Environmental History discipline were used, due to their closer relations with geographic science and for providing consistent theoretical framework for understanding the theme, addressing the physical configuration of the affected areas (level 1), the actions the outstanding syntagmatic actors (level 2), in addition to issues related to culture and memory, the structures of meaning, myths, values and attitudes, that is, ideas as ecological agents (level 3). Besides, some environmental movements that arose and / or intensified in the post-tragedy were addressed. As a general result, there was a relative depression of concerns regarding environmental problems over the past ten years, despite the marks left by the disaster, both material and immaterial
