Resumo: The AIDS epidemic presents itself in a dynamic and multifactorial way, and its prevalence occurs beyond biological issues or viral characteristics. Women s exposure to HIV includes issues of sexual behavior, living conditions, gender, age, among others. Thus, this study has as object the meanings attributed by women to their exposure to HIV/AIDS from their process of social interaction. The objectives were: to identify the meanings attributed by women to their exposure to HIV/AIDS and analyze their process of social interaction regarding exposure to HIV/AIDS based on the meanings attributed by them. This is a descriptive research with qualitative approach. The scenario of the study was public spaces of great circulation as beaches, public squares and streets in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Such a choice sought not to restrict the approach of women nor to direct their responses by the diversity and rotation. The study participants were 13 women, who were passing by these places, aged between 22 and 64 years old and formed 4 sample groups. Data collection was conducted and recorded through semi-structured interview, after approval of CEP/UERJ 1,747,076. Data analysis followed the assumptions of Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory. Data were organized and analyzed in 3 categories, which showed that through formal education, media, scientific studies, orientation from professionals or close relations and past memories, women attribute meanings to their exposure to HIV/AIDS. This exposure means not to protect and not be protected by the other in the sense of carelessness, irresponsibility and recklessness. Getting into the situation and defining the situation for themselves, women know what should be done to not expose themselves. They consider the use of condoms, personal protective equipment in the workplace and adoption of non-deviant behaviors to be fundamental, which determine their line of action and open attitude of not using condom and recognizing their exposure to HIV/AIDS, considering others more exposed. It was identified as a central category: Choosing to neglect one s own life despite being aware of the exposure to HIV/AIDS , which allowed us to infer that regardless the woman s knowledge about the ways of contamination and exposure to HIV/AIDS, their level of schooling, their age, type of relationship, and activity, she decides not to protect herself. The study concludes that there is a gap between what she knows and what she does, that is, she knows that it is necessary to protect herself against exposure to the virus, but decides to neglect her own health in favor of her partner. For this, she seeks to soften this exposure through non-effective minimizing measures that are influenced by the ideological context. In this aspect, professionals should seek to apprehend these women s perceptions in order to contribute for the change of their action line in a health promotion perspective. Thus, autonomy and empowerment of women should be stimulated with the purpose of assisting in the process of change and providing subsidies for the decision-making process regarding their sexual involvements and their health.

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-06T14:36:24Z No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTACAO_FINAL_VANESSA_SILVA_DE_OLIVEIRA.pdf: 737883 bytes, checksum: c9d3f022bab101febe1f171e3a3dc44a (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-06T14:36:24Z (GMT).
