The goal of this work is to explore the discourses of Brazilian travesties and transexuais activists on the distinction between the social identities of travesties and transexuais and their impact on the demands and proposals of public health policies, specifically in relation to body modifications. I conducted semistructured interviews which. main subjects addressed were: militant path, differentiation between travestis and transexuais, organization of the movement, the political agenda, body modifications and demands on health. In addition, I conducted ethnographic observations during meetings of the LGBT movement, as well as during meetings of Brazilian Trans Movement, especially the XVI and XVII National Meeting of Transvestites and Transsexuals (ENTLAIDS) held in Rio de Janeiro in 2009, and in Aracaju in 2010; the Fifth Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean of ILGA (International Lesbian and Gay Association), held in Curitiba in 2009, and I National March Against Homophobia, held on May, 19th 2010 in Brasilia. Based on this work, I reconstruct the history of the Trans Movement in Brazil, where it is possible to locate the emergence of travesti and transexual as identity categories and the political conflicts they produce. My analysis focus on the relationship between theses identity categories and stigmatizing ones like prostitution, and especially on the capacity of incorporation or appropriation of medical and psychiatric discourses in the construction of social identities. This includes the influence of social class and access to specialized health services, notably the process of health care for transsexuals in the Brazilian public health system. Finally, the analysis of the main demands of the movement led me to establish a link between recognition policies and processes of purification.
