This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between the left and democracy in Latin America. The study analyzes the role of political parties in the adoption (or not) of a variety of forms of citizen participation that exist in the region, from the local to the national, and proposes to explain (a) why and how the theme of citizen participation was incorporated into the program of left-wing parties (b) what are the factors that explain the adoption of forms of citizen participation in the governments of some left-wing parties, compared to others that did not and (c) what are the changes related to the theme of citizen participation carried out by the parties of the left and that translate into their governments. The investigation used the Comparative Historical-Method and was based on (a) the analysis of documents, divided into party manifestos, electoral manifestos, norms, and legislation, and (b) semi-structured interviews with party elites. The experiences of the Workers' Party (PT) in Brazil, the Socialist Party of Chile (PSCh) and the Broad Front (FA) in Uruguay have been looked at. The conclusions indicate that the adoption of forms of citizen participation in the governments of those parties is the result of the presence of a participatory ethos in the foundation of those organizations, and their development depends on the maintenance of this participatory ethos by their factions and their existing social ties, with variations in PT and FA and non-existent in PSCh.
