This dissertation addresses the meanings of school discursively constructed by eight former students of a public school in the State Education Network of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The general objective of this research was to build understandings about the meanings attributed by the young participants interviewed to their experiences in the CE, the school where they completed High School. With the contribution of authors from the anthropology of emotions, sociology of education, from the field of education, among others, different nuances and interpretations of their school life were identified. Through a perspective of discourse as social action aligned with the contribution of emotions present in the narratives, understandings of the school were created as a place for reproduction of inequalities, social mobility, freedom, as well as oppression and reification.
