The problematic situation that evoked this master thesis originated in clinical practice, since it was from the father demand on the part of the analysand (herein called "André") that the following research issue was raised: how does one articulate father demand in analysis? This initial question arose another important issue: How should the analyst place themselves in the transference resulting from father demand? The research aimed at clarifying the place of the analyst in the transference, deriving from father demand, as well as the incidence of the paternal function in analysis. The impasse borne in clinical practice caused a concern about the concept of father in psychoanalysis, thus an extensive review of the psychoanalytic theory of the father was conducted, examining the main points of the Freudian and Lacanian theories on the topic. When Lacan distinguished the father function in the three registers - Real, Symbolic and Imaginary - he contributed decisively to define the law of the father in psychoanalysis. The father function, as far as the child´s psychic structuring from the Oedipus outcome is concerned, is a symbolic function. In the transference, the symbolic function of the father safeguards the dimension of the desire, the crucial aspect of the father function in the transference is its consubstantiality with the valuation, its placing essential for desire to happen. After establishing the law of the paternal function in the theories of Freud and Lacan, and the place of the father in the analytical experience, the current master thesis extended into the evaluation of the father's place in contemporary social bond. The decline of paternal authority in current times is an undeniable fact. In this thesis, the factors that corroborated for the decline of the paternal function are analyzed, and the consequences of the father's debacle are questioned, both on the social and on the individual realms. Beyond the vicissitudes resulting from the failing of the paternal function in the social realm, this master thesis investigated the vicissitudes of contemporary psychoanalytic clinical practice correlated with this fact, such as the so-called "new symptoms clinic"
