This work aims to analyse the trajectory of Comando Geral dos Trabalhadores, the CGT, in the sixties, dialoguing with the memory that has been built about the performance of brazilian workers in this period. This will be done through printed sources’ investigation on CGT actions and on speeches from its leadership. Once called “old” syndicalists in the eighties, they tell a story of fighting against tables imposed by the Ministry of Works on the union leadership and confederations and stories of mobilization and fighting against the syndical structure for the right of building an entity that represented the struggle of all workers despite their categories. Moreover, this thesis aims to demonstrate that the CGT actions had great relevance in the national political scenery, especially during João Goulart’s government. The union-government relations, the mobilization for a grassroot reform and the worsening of political contradictions between the right and left parties that led to the 1974 civil-military coup, also make part of this analysis.
