Resumo: This study proposes to discuss the social support system in prison. It analyses the situation experienced by females regarding visiting in Rio de Janeiro prison system. Such work focuses on the family role providing primary social support to incarcerated females, and its importance during the period they are confined as well as when they return to social life in freedom. The field research was developed at 'elson Hungria prison system in Rio de Janeiro, and was performed through oral history interviews. The outcomes were used to relate the peculiar reality experienced by prisoned females, highlighting the barriers that they daily face due to the lack of visiting during imprisonment. The results of study allow us conclude that females incarcerated who do not receive visiting are more vulnerable; are subject to material needs ; and if their crime sentence is long and they have no family members to take care of their children so the child custody can be lost. The present work also brings a reflection about the family welfare, which, if present in low levels, does not allow it exercise the full potential of its role as social support entity.

O estudo privilegia a família enquanto rede de proteção social primária e sua importância para as mulheres encarceradas, tanto no período de reclusão quanto para o retorno ao convívio social, em liberdade. A partir de pesquisa de campo no Presídio Feminino Nelson Hungria, através das falas das protagonistas deste estudo, utilizamo-nos da história oral para retratar a realidade peculiar vivenciada pelas mulheres presas, os entraves que encontram no cotidiano do cárcere com a ausência das visitas. Pôde-se identificar que as presas que não são visitadas ficam mais vulneráveis no cárcere; convivem com necessidades materiais não atendidas; e, dependendo do tempo de condenação, se não têm familiares para cuidar de seus filhos, perdem sua guarda.
