O surfe nas ondas da mídia : um estudo de Fluir nos anos 1980

Resumo: | The research which originated this thesis aimed to investigate Fluir magazine between 1983 and 1988. The main question was to discuss the role played by that publication as a mediator of surfing experience for its readers. The subject is looked at though the notion of niche media, whose values and way of functioning have clear differences in relation to hegemonic journalism. Through the concepts of niche media and subcultures, this thesis seeks to put in perspective the categories (specialyzed journalism and segmented journalism) commonly used to analyse this kind of subject as a part of traditional journalism. Surfing is understood as a media subculture, which helps explore its cultural dimension, more precisely, the role played by that publication in constructing and spreading out the sport and its values (including social class). This thesis analyses the role Fluir magazine played in this development process and in the strong expansion of the surfing market. The methodology combines content analysis of text and image (specially photographs), which looks over both journalism and advertising. All editions published between 1983 and 1988 available on the Periodics section of Brazilian National Library were investigated. In a less sistematic way, films, other publications on surfing and extreme sports, books and internet websites were also observed. The time range covers a period in which surfing suffered intense transformations and was definitely consolidated as a professional sport in Brazil. This study has found that the growing of three elements surf market, surfing as a sport and Fluir are closely bonded: each process feeds and strenghtens the others. In this sense, the media has a key role in giving visibility to the agents involved, constructing representatios on aspects such as the Brazilian surfer s quality, company roles, travels, competitions, sponsorship and gender. This is done in order to present surfing as a healthy and positive sport, fighting against a series of stigmas that covers itself and its adepts. |

A questão central discutiu o papel da revista como mediadora da experiência do surfe para os seus leitores. O olhar lançado sobre o objeto o analisa a partir da idéia de mídia de nicho, cujos valores e forma de funcionar guardam diferenças nítidas em relação ao jornalismo hegemônico. Por meio dos conceitos de mídia de nicho e subculturas, esta tese busca relativizar as categorias (jornalismo especializado e jornalismo segmentado) normalmente utilizadas para analisar este tipo de objeto como parte do jornalismo tradicional. A abordagem do surfe como uma subcultura midiática permitiu a exploração de sua dimensão cultural, mais precisamente o papel desempenhado pela publicação na construção e divulgação da modalidade e dos valores (de classe social, inclusive) que a permeiam. A tese analisa o papel desempenhado pela revista neste processo de desenvolvimento e na ampliação significativa do mercado em torno do surfe. A metodologia utilizada combina análise de conteúdo de texto e imagem (principalmente fotografias), a qual se debruça tanto sobre os espaços de jornalismo quanto de publicidade. Foram investigadas de forma sistemática todas as edições publicadas entre 1983 e 1988 disponíveis no acervo da Seção de Periódicos da Biblioteca Nacional. De maneira assistemática, foram observados filmes, exemplares de outras publicações sobre surfe e esportes radicais, livros e sítios da internet. O recorte temporal cobre um período em que o surfe sofreu intensas transformações e se consolidou definitivamente como esporte profissional no país. Constatou-se que o crescimento de três elementos mercado do surfe, surfe como esporte e Fluir está intimamente articulado: cada processo alimenta e fortalece os demais. Neste sentido, a mídia tem participação notável ao divulgar e dar visibilidade aos agentes envolvidos, construindo representações sobre aspectos como qualidade do surfista brasileiro, papel das empresas, viagens, competições, patrocínio e gênero.
