Pathological love is defined by excessive and repetitive behaviors of providing care to the partner, with the need for the same for emotional stability. The present study aims to assess psychological factor about love relationships and pathological love and to compare men and women. It starts with a brief historical review of the formation of the concept of romantic love in the West, followed by a quantitative study that assesses pathological love and other psychological variables. In the latter case, a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out through an online questionnaire. The instruments used assess psychological and sociodemographic variables relevant to love and pathological love, such as attachment, gender roles, self-esteem and beliefs about love. The final sample consisted of 702 respondents (N= 702) and was collected from June to September 2020, the period corresponding to the first wave of COVID-19 in Brazil. The results show that there is a statistically significant correlation and prediction between pathological love, anxious attachment and self-esteem. Regarding pathological love factors, the regression analysis showed that self-esteem is the variable that most predicts self-sacrifice in love relationships. That is, lower levels of self-esteem increase self-sacrifice. In comparison between groups, men showed lower self-esteem and greater self-sacrifice in love relationships compared to women. There were no differences in prevalence in pathological love between men and women. Men and women with pathological love showed more similarities compared to those without pathological love.
