Resumo: Obesity is a metabolic disorder which has increasing in alarming proportions all over the world. This study objective was to evaluate kidney and liver function in 14 mixed breed neutered bitches submitted to a weight gain program and subsequent weight loss treatment. At the end of weight gain program, the bitches fed an ad libitum way with hypercaloric diet was divided in two groups, one which has reached 14,58% and another 20,43% of overweight. In the weight loss treatment the bitches were organized in two new groups, fed a 60% of energetic requirement for maintenance with hypocaloric or maintenance diet. The kidney was evaluated by urine specific gravity, urea and creatinine serum levels, urinary GGT and urinary protein to urinary creatinine ratio. Liver evaluation was made by serum ALT, ALP, GGT, albumin, cholesterol and bilirubins. The weight gain increases urea and decreases cholesterol and GGT serum levels. The weight loss decreases urine specific gravity, urea and serum cholesterol, by the way increases GGT activity, returning to the same levels of the beginning of the study. The short time overweight does not induced deleterious effects on kidney and liver function. There is no difference between hypocaloric or maintenance diet in terms of weight loss and quality of kidney and liver function

Este estudo objetivou avaliar a função renal e hepática de 14 cadelas sem raça definida, castradas, submetidas a programas de ganho e subseqüente perda de peso. Ao final do ganho de peso as fêmeas alimentadas à vontade com dieta hipercalórica foram divididas em dois grupos, que apresentaram sobrepesos finais de 14,58% e 20,43%. Na fase de emagrecimento as cadelas foram reordenadas em dois novos grupos e alimentadas com dieta normo e hipocalórica, sob restrição de 60% das necessidades energéticas para manutenção. O rim foi avaliado por meio da determinação da densidade específica urinária, dosagem de uréia e creatinina séricas, GGT urinária e aplicação do índice PU:CrU. O fígado pela determinação da atividade sérica de ALT, ALP e GGT e concentração de albumina, colesterol, bilirrubina total, direta e indireta. O ganho de peso ocasionou elevação da uréia e redução do colesterol e da GGT sérica. A perda de peso resultou em diminuição da densidade urinária, da uréia e colesterol sérico, enquanto a atividade sérica da GGT elevou-se, retornando aos valores do início do estudo. A presença de sobrepeso ou obesidade por curto período de tempo não induz falha na função renal e hepática. O estabelecimento de um programa de perda de peso utilizando dieta normocalórica é tão eficaz quanto o realizado com dieta hipocalórica, considerando tanto a redução do peso quanto a manutenção da função renal e hepática de cadelas sem raça definidaMade available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T15:07:50Z (GMT).
