Resumo: An experiment was carried out using sugar cane cuttings with one or two shoots from tree distinct areas of the stalk, the tip, the middle and the base, to caracterize reserve mobilization and it relation with plant growth. The cuttings were germinated in washed sand, and samples were taken every sevem days during a period of 42 days. Dry material and the soluble protein levels, free aminoacids, total soluble sugars, saccharose an reduced sugars were assessed in every 2,5 cm long portions of each of the cutting. Dry material of the formed plant was assessed too. Linear decreases in the dry material weight of the cuttings were observed in this period. The reduction was greater in cuttings with two shoots and in cuttings from the tip of the stalk. Reserves reduction was greater in the portions beside shoots. The plant growth were not affected by the quantity of the cutting reserves.

The plant growth were not affected by the quantity of the cutting reserves.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Com objetivo de caracterizar a mobilização de reservas em toletes de cana-de-açúcar, bem como relacioná-la com aspectos de crescimento da planta durante a fase inicial de crescimento, conduziu-se um experimento usando toletes com uma e com duas gemas provindos de três posições distintas do colmo, sendo elas: a pical, mediana e basal. Os toletes foram colocados para germinar na horizontal em caixas contendo areia lavada e durante o período experimental de 42 dias coletou-se amostras a cada 7 dias. Avaliou-se a matéria seca para os toletes e para as plantas formadas. Avaliou-se também a cada amostragem, os teores de açúcares solúvies totais, sacarose, açúcres redutores, proteínas solúveis e aminoácidos livres em cada porção de 2,5 cm do tolete de plantio. Durante o período observado, a matéria seca dos toletes decresceu a taxas lineares, sendo este decréscimo maior nos toletes com duas gemas e considerando a posição de origem na planta, nos toletes da posição apical. Ocorreu maior consumo de reservas nas partes mais próximas à gema.
