The research seeks to understand the practice of image reading in art teaching in Brazil and conceptualize it within the historical-cultural perspective. A bibliographical research that through the understanding of the practice of reading images of works of art, builds the importance of the presence of art teaching and its space in the school, for the development and formation of human senses. We also aim to dialogue on the basis of historical and dialectical materialism, contextualizing the constitutive elements of image reading practices, which its intrinsic character to art teaching, with a view to the aesthetic education. For the realization and elaboration of this work, we rely on theoretical studies based on Vigotski (2009), Consuelo Schlichta (2009a, 2009b, 2011, 2012), Fernandes (2015), between others. This research develops the argument that socialization, access to artistic codes and procedures, when art teachers have an understanding of the entire educational work, even under the mishaps of an education in the midst of the contradiction of a capitalist society, can establish a critique of lightened practices rooted in common sense, therefore, this work is developed with the support in cultural-historical psychology and in historical-critical pedagogy that the practice of image reading is enriching for teaching art.
