Uma das principais preocupações tem sido a melhoria da formação específica dos arquitetos, bem como o desenvolvimento de mecanismos que possibilitem a inserção desses profissionais no processo global de concepção, cálculo, fabricação e montagem das estruturas metálicas. Entretanto, os arquitetos ressentem-se da falta de ferramentas que permitam, de modo rápido e prático, estimar as dimensões necessárias dos elementos estruturais, de modo a possibilitar-lhes não somente a perspectiva de análise das interferências no projeto arquitetônico, mas também a percepção das implicações da utilização de tais elementos no comportamento global da estrutura e do conseqüente consumo de aço. Este trabalho tem por objetivo a apresentação das principais características de uma ferramenta computacional, cuja finalidade básica é proporcionar aos arquitetos a oportunidade de estabelecer, de forma bastante realista, as dimensões necessárias para as vigas e pilares, em perfis laminados, de uma estrutura metálica, a partir de informações decorrentes do projeto arquitetônico, tais como, entre outras, os vãos das vigas, os tipos de materiais (lajes e vedações) e a finalidade da construção, além fornecer informações que possibilitem a utilização racional dos perfis recomendados, com vistas à minimização do peso dos elementos estruturais e ao melhor atendimento das condições de coordenação modular.The development of the market using the steel in the buildings has been shown the real necessity of interaction between the architects and engineers works. One of the main concerns has been the improvement of the architect’s specific formation, as well as the development of mechanisms that introduce those professionals in the global process of conception design, production and assembly of the steel structures. Nevertheless, the architects are resented of the lack of tools that allow them, in a fast and practical way, to establish the necessary dimensions of the structural elements, in way to facilitate not only the perspective of analysis of the interferences in the architectural project, but the perception of the implications of the use of such elements in the global behavior of the structure and of the consequent consumption of steel too.
