Resumo: This study aimed to describe and analyze the efficiency of the method of Pettenkofer in determining the respiratory activity for the differentiation of seeds lots on its vigor. Five lots of soybean seeds cv. Taura, wheat cv. Cd115 and sunflower cv. MG2 were used. Besides the determination of respiratory activity, the following tests were conducted as reference: germination, first count of germination, electrical conductivity, seedlings emergence, length of the shoot and root, and dry mass. The results of reference tests and respiratory activity of seeds allowed the classification of lots at different levels of physiological quality. The timing of soaking and permanence of soybean, wheat and sunflower, in the equipment of Pettenkofer was enough to provide the distinction of lots. According to the results, it appears that lots of high vigor show more respiratory activity than the lower vigor. The determination of respiratory activity, for the method of Pettenkofer, is efficient, quick and useful as alternative test in the differentiation of vigor of lots, of soybean seeds cv. Taura, wheat cv. Cd115 and sunflower cv. MG2

MG2Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a atividade respiratória pelo método de Pettenkofer como método para avaliação da qualidade fisiológica em diferentes espécies de sementes. Cinco lotes de soja cv. Taura, trigo cv. CD115 e girassol cv. MG2 foram utilizados. Além da determinação da atividade respiratória, foram realizados os seguintes testes de referência: germinação, primeira contagem da germinação, condutividade elétrica, emergência de plântulas, comprimento de parte aérea, raiz e massa fresca e seca. Os resultados dos testes de referência e da atividade respiratória das sementes permitiram a classificação dos lotes em diferentes níveis de qualidade fisiológica. O tempo de embebição e de permanência das sementes de soja, trigo e girassol no aparelho de Pettenkofer foi suficiente para proporcionar a distinção dos lotes. De acordo com os resultados, conclui-se que lotes de alto vigor apresentam menor atividade respiratória que os de baixo vigor. A determinação da atividade respiratória, pelo método de Pettenkofer, é eficiente, rápida e útil como teste alternativo na diferenciação do vigor de lotes de sementes de soja cv. Taura, trigo cv.
