Resumo: Studies on bioecology, pathology and chemotherapy for control of Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr., 1781) were conducted at W.O. Neitz Parasitological Research Station, of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, from May of 1985 to April of 1986. The objectives of the present study were: to investigate aspects of the pupation of D. hominis during one year in three soil substrates and to correlate the results with mesoclimatic data; to evaluate inflamatory reactions to the development of larvae in cattle; to determine the efficacy of chemical compounds in the treatment of cattle infected by D. hominis. The results observed in the present studies indicated that the pupation phase and emergence of adults during the year were influenced by the different types of substrates, by climatic conditions, by action of predators and other organisms which caused a negative impact on third stage larvae, pupae and adults. Temperature and rainfall were identified as the two major climatic factors which can influence the development of xxxiv. the non-parasitic stages. Skin biopsies were taken from cattle during the development of larval stage from 24 hours up to 960 hours after artificial infestation and different inflamatory reactions were evident during the evolution of the parasitic stages. Efficacy of chemical compounds was determined using artificially infested cattle. The combination of albendazole (anthelmintic) with trichlorfon (organophosphate) administered orally to cattle showed an efficacy of 87.5% to 100%. Treatment of cattle by spraying a combination of a synthetic pyrethroid alphamethrin and an organophosphate, dichlorvos (DDVP) was 100% effective. Two juvenile hormone analogues, administered in feed, were 100% efficacion in inhibiting development of first stage larvae. Carbamates, used by spraying cattle infested with third stage larvae, had a low efficacy compared with other compounds used. A guinea pig model used for evaluation of chemotherapy did not result as expected. Determination of the residual period of activity of ivermectin showed a protection period to artificial challenge up to 14 days after treatment. Spraying of cattle with the pyrethroid alphamethrin (0.005%) provided a protection period up to 18 days following treatment.

Submitted by Celso Magalhaes (celsomagalhaes@ufrrj.br) on 2020-09-30T15:37:03Z No. of bitstreams: 1 1987 - Argemiro Sanavria.pdf: 2050865 bytes, checksum: b80c58076f5f5b7ae2ee1ead82b641b6 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-09-30T15:37:03Z (GMT). description Studies on bioecology, pathology and chemotherapy for control of Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr., 1781) were conducted at W.O.
