Resumo: | Bleaching is one of the most important stages in the processing of vegetable oils. This processing step is currently carried out in discontinuous mode through adsorption of the oil pigments on appropriates bleaching clays. Brazilian food companies employ large amounts of imported clays that are difficult to regenerate, increase the bleaching costs, and generate a great quantity of industrial waste. This work proposes changes in the operation mode and in the adsorbent for the bleaching process. With this purpose, a column packed with triturated corncob operated in continuous mode was used for bleaching corn oil. Corncob was proposed as an alternative adsorbent because it is described in the literature as a material with great adsorption power, besides it is part of the corn oil production chain. Bleaching process was carried out in continuous mode in a packed-bed column with 0,5m length and 0,0508m diameter. The proposed process lead to clarification levels comparable to those using industrial bleaching clays, while decreasing around 30% the oil?s acidity without alkali addition. |

Esta etapa geralmente ? conduzida em um processo descont?nuo atrav?s da adsor??o dos pigmentos que conferem cor aos ?leos em argilas adequadas para este fim. Nesta etapa, a ind?stria de alimentos faz uso de grandes quantidades de argilas importadas que, por serem de dif?cil recupera??o, encarecem o processo e geram grande quantidade de res?duo industrial. Devido a isso, este trabalho prop?e um estudo da viabilidade de uma mudan?a nesse processo, quanto ao modo de opera??o, e ao adsorvente utilizado na clarifica??o do ?leo de milho. Ensaios de clarifica??o foram conduzidos em modo cont?nuo e como adsorvente, a proposta foi de utilizar o sabugo de milho. Tal material ? descrito na literatura como de consider?vel poder adsortivo, faz parte da cadeia de produ??o do ?leo de milho, e a escolha do mesmo, oferece a vantagem da reutiliza??o de um res?duo agroindustrial. O processo de clarifica??o conduzido em modo cont?nuo foi realizado em uma coluna de leito fixo de 0,5 m de altura e 0,0508 m de di?metro, acoplada ? uma bomba dosadora e man?metros na entrada e na sa?da da coluna, para o acompanhamento da perda de carga causada pelo recheio. O ?leo de milho cru foi bombeado atrav?s do topo da coluna preenchida com leitos, constitu?dos de sabugo de milho triturado, argila comercial, e uma mistura dos dois. As amostras de ?leo clarificado foram coletadas no fundo da coluna. O processo teve seu desempenho avaliado com o monitoramento da despigmenta??o do ?leo cru, feito atrav?s de medidas da absorv?ncia do ?leo em faixa de comprimento de onda pr?- determinada, e do monitoramento do ?ndice de acidez livre das amostras. Bleaching is one of the most important stages in the processing of vegetable oils. This processing step is currently carried out in discontinuous mode through adsorption of the oil pigments on appropriates bleaching clays. Brazilian food companies employ large amounts of imported clays that are difficult to regenerate, increase the bleaching costs, and generate a great quantity of industrial waste. This work proposes changes in the operation mode and in the adsorbent for the bleaching process. With this purpose, a column packed with triturated corncob operated in continuous mode was used for bleaching corn oil. Corncob was proposed as an alternative adsorbent because it is described in the literature as a material with great adsorption power, besides it is part of the corn oil production chain. Bleaching process was carried out in continuous mode in a packed-bed column with 0,5m length and 0,0508m diameter. The proposed process lead to clarification levels comparable to those using industrial bleaching clays, while decreasing around 30% the oil?s acidity without alkali addition. |
