The environmental issues have been at the center of the major world discussions since the second half of the twentieth century. The environmental movement strengthened as it became more evident that the intensive use of the natural resources and the means of production would lead the planet to the depletion of the resources. The companies, responsible for many environmental damages and accidents, mainly in the course of the decade of 1990, have played the central role in the creation of the sustainable development practices, including not only the environmental issues, but also the social and economic ones. For companies that operate in sectors with higher impact potential, as for example the mining sector, it became more necessary to highlight the capacity to operate in a way to ensure the environmental, economic and social sustainability. In this Dissertation, it will be studied the process of elaboration of the sustainability strategies of the company Vale S.A, as well as the structural adjustments performed by it, in different moments of its path. For this purpose, Alfred Chandler was chosen as theoretical reference, analyzing the relations between the sustainability strategies of Vale S.A and the structures created by the company to implement those strategies. The initial hypothesis related the internationalization process, started in the 2000s, with the formulation of sustainability strategies, what was confirmed from the reports obtained by means of interviews with professionals that worked in the sustainability departments of Vale at this period. To become a global company, it was necessary to comply with the practices of the big mining companies related, that had already disclosed their sustainability strategies. In this way, Vale S.A starts the publication of the sustainability reports and the elaboration of its sustainable development policy. As a consequence, Vale S.A developed a series of management processes and tools that allowed adapting processes to the sustainability practices.
