Resumo: The first outbreak of swine circoviruse infection which occurred in the State of Rio de Janeiro was described. The disease which affects mainly weaned pigs, about 4 months old, caused the death of at least 14 animals. The property where the outbreak occurred, had inadequate sanitary and management conditions. Clinically the disease was characterized by wasting, poor development, coughing, tachypnoea, dispnoea, ataxia , tremors after simulation, decubitus and convulsions. The course of the disease was acute to subacute. The most important post-mortem findings were paleness of the body, enlarged lymphnodes, non-colapsed lungs, with consolidated ?reas mainly in the cranial lobes. Histological lesions consisted mainly of lymphohistiocytic infiltration with multinucleate giant cells cells in lymph nodes, spleen, Peyer?s patches, kidney, lungs and liver, depletion and/or lymphoid hyperplasia, as well as lymphohistiocytic intersticial pneumonia and areas of secondary broncopneumonia. The diagnosis was established through observations of the symptoms and typical lesions of Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS), and was confirmed by immunohistochemical examination and PCR. The objective of this study was to characterize the epidemiological and clinical-pathological aspects of na outbreak of PMWS in Rio de Janeiro, because of its severe direct or indirect economical losses to the world pig industry.

A enfermidade que afetou, principalmente, su?nos desmamados com idade em torno de 4 meses, levou a ?bito pelo menos 14 animais. A granja onde o surto ocorreu tinha p?ssimas condi??es sanit?rias e de manejo. Clinicamente, a doen?a caracterizou-se por m? condi??o corporal, pouco desenvolvimento, tosse, taquipn?ia, dispn?ia, diarr?ia, ataxia, tremores ap?s est?mulo, dec?bito e convuls?es, com evolu??o aguda ? subaguda. ? necropsia, os achados mais importantes foram palidez da carca?a, aumento de linfonodos e pulm?es n?o-colapsados, com ?reas consolidadas, principalmente nos lobos craniais e por??o anterior dos lobos m?dios. O exame histol?gico revelou , com maior freq??ncia, infiltra??o linfo-histioc?tica com c?lulas sinciciais em linfonodos, ba?o, placas de Peyer, rim, pulm?o e f?gado, deple??o e/ou hiperplasia linfon?ide, bem como pneumonia bronco-interstical linfo-histiocit?ria e ?reas de broncopneumonia secund?ria. O diagn?stico firmou-se pela observa??o dos sintomas e les?es histol?gicas t?picas da S?ndrome Definhante Multissist?mica de Su?nos Desmamados (SDMSD) e foi confirmado por exame imunohistoqu?mico e PCR. description The first outbreak of swine circoviruse infection which occurred in the State of Rio de Janeiro was described. The disease which affects mainly weaned pigs, about 4 months old, caused the death of at least 14 animals. The property where the outbreak occurred, had inadequate sanitary and management conditions. Clinically the disease was characterized by wasting, poor development, coughing, tachypnoea, dispnoea, ataxia , tremors after simulation, decubitus and convulsions. The course of the disease was acute to subacute. The most important post-mortem findings were paleness of the body, enlarged lymphnodes, non-colapsed lungs, with consolidated ?reas mainly in the cranial lobes. Histological lesions consisted mainly of lymphohistiocytic infiltration with multinucleate giant cells cells in lymph nodes, spleen, Peyer?s patches, kidney, lungs and liver, depletion and/or lymphoid hyperplasia, as well as lymphohistiocytic intersticial pneumonia and areas of secondary broncopneumonia. The diagnosis was established through observations of the symptoms and typical lesions of Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS), and was confirmed by immunohistochemical examination and PCR. The objective of this study was to characterize the epidemiological and clinical-pathological aspects of na outbreak of PMWS in Rio de Janeiro, because of its severe direct or indirect economical losses to the world pig industry.
