Resumo: The ecosystem engineers are important for the maintenance of biodiversity, by increasing the environmental heterogeneity. This work aimed to study the effects of the ants on the distribution of seeds and plants and in soil chemical properties. The study was conducted in three forest fragments and in a pasture, in the Vale do Para?ba, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To assess the seed removal rate and the dispersal distance, forty observation stations were established in each environment, each station containing six seeds of Carica papaya L (papaya). In order to study germinated seeds and soil chemical properties, soil samples were collected in nests of Odontomachus chelifer (Latreille) and Pachycondyla striata Fr. Smith and in adjacent sites. The plant abundance and plant species richness, from 5cm to 30cm in height, were obtained in parcels delimited over each nest and in adjacent sites. Seventeen species removed 316 seeds (32.92% of total seeds exposed) and P. striata was the species that removed most seeds, followed by O. chelifer. In 120 samples of soil, 980 plants germinated, belonging to 46 species. In general, the abundance of plants, the number of germinated seeds and the species richness were higher in nests of O. chelifer and P. striata than in adjacent sites (paired t test; P < 0.05). The seed removal rate is potentiated in environments with higher densities of P. striata nests. The species O. chelifer and P. striata remove the seeds to their nests. This interaction can provide advantages for plants because the soil of the nests has better chemical properties for seed germination and plant growth. These ants are ecosystem engineers and contribute to the success of plant establishment and for biodiversity conservation in the Vale do Para?ba.

Essas formigas s?o engenheiras de ecossistemas e colaboram para o sucesso do estabelecimento de plantas e para a manuten??o da biodiversidade no Vale do Para?ba.Submitted by Sandra Pereira (srpereira@ufrrj.br) on 2020-05-14T14:39:29Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2012 - F?bio Souto de Almeida.pdf: 1338280 bytes, checksum: c0b19b31d866ef160f9a8e8c436565fa (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2020-05-14T14:39:29Z (GMT). description The ecosystem engineers are important for the maintenance of biodiversity, by increasing the environmental heterogeneity.
