Reading and understanding are fundamental skills in the formation of the individual. In this sense, this dissertation research aims to analyze the cognitive processes performed by the reader, having the deixis as a linguistic mechanism in the correspondence between character, space and time in the chronic genre. The focus of analysis are the relations of meaning through the deictics elements carried out by the students. For the development of this work, we are supported in the studies of Cognition and Teaching, having as theoretical reference the studies on reading levels proposed by Applegate et al (2002). As a methodology, our research is based on a qualitative analysis, in which we develop a proposal with activities elaborated at the reading levels proposed by Applegate et al (2002) to verify the complexity of the cognitive processes of the students of a 9th grade class public institution of Rio de Janeiro. The data from the analysis reveal the need for activities that encourage the development of reading levels that lead students to reflect on their own learning and emphasize the importance of working with activities of high inferential level.
