The reflections that are part of this work is the result of the case study carried out from 2015 to 2017, with the free trade fairs of the Diamantina, Minas Gerais. The research was based on the qualitative approach of the elements of the fairs, and was developed in three steps: a) construction of the theoretical reference; B) data collection by saturation through semi-structured interviews and consultation of secondary data, and c) in the interpretation of data obtained and work writing. The main objective is to analyze the free trade fairs of the Diamantina city, Minas Gerais, identifying the agents involved in the consolidation of these short marketing channels and to investigate the extent to which free trade fairs are viable market alternatives for the region's small farmers. Through this objective we hope to answer, mainly, which are the difficulties faced by small farmers in accessing and remain in the free trade fairs of the city of Diamantina, Minas Gerais. Diamantina, during centuries, had its economy based on the extraction of ore, gold and diamonds, this condition contributed to other sectors of the economy being left aside, as happened with the small farm and the runoff channels of the production of these farmers. The existence of the informal trade, characterized by the free trade fair in Diamantina is not recent, and since the tropeiros time, however, the commercialization with focus on the small farm production is recent in the municipality. The fairs are places of economic exchange and has social and cultural importance because this fair happens for several reasons, including by the strongest expression and reproduction of the municipality tradition. However, with the appearance of the last fair, the Free Trade Fair of Largo Dom João, some elements related to access and permanence became evidents, representing the greatest difficulties for the fairground farmers. It was observed that competition with intermediaries, expensive transportation and precarious roads, the lack of unity among the fairground farmers represented by the associations inertia in the strengthening and search for alternatives to the difficulties encountered, besides the poor access by consumers to these channels, are the main rasons of desistência in the commercialization in the fairs. It was also verified that the sociabilities provided by the fair has more significant importance for the retired or salaried fairground farmers, where in these case the fair is only a complement to the family income.
