Sustainable development is a globally recognized goal and has become instrumental in the daily operation of both public and private organizations. That, together with the need to comply with legal provisions, makes the development of sustainable practices for organizational processes essential. The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) is engaged in th at movement, seeking more and more to adopt actions that are in line with s ustainability. I n this context, this study aims to analyze the adoption of printing islands as a sustainable practice at the UFSM in printer leasing processes, using a descriptive quali quantitative case study. The data were collected at UFSM using documen t analysis, semi structured interviews and questionnaires applied to employees. UFSM adopted printer leasing as a sustainable practice to reduce spending and input stocks (ink cartridges and toners). In the period from 2010 to 2014 two such adoption proces ses were carried out, leading to a growing number of university units adopting this practice. The university hospital was the unit that made the largest number of leases, thus the hospital was chosen for mapping the printers utilized as printing islands. O nly 24% of the leased equipment installed could be characterized as printing islands, although this practice is considered to be a priority. The analysis of pre and post installation input consumption of printers used as islands, in equal periods of eight months, showed a 95% reduction in toner consumption and no change in the consumption of paper. For employee opinions on the adoption of printing islands and related issues, the concepts that were least understood to employees were printing islands, govern ment programs, The Sustainable Logistics Plan and printer leasing processes at the University. Based on the results, suggestions were made for adopting printing islands as a sustainable practice at UFSM aiming for proper design and dissemination and improv ed acceptance and use by the academic community. We hope that this study can contribute to the university's development and dissemination of sustainable practices and rationalization of expenses, seeking greater community awareness about this important iss ue.
