Resumo: The general goal of this dissertation is to discuss the demarcation problem, analysing the perspectives offered by Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, and Larry Laudan. So as to achieve that goal, the dissertation comprises three chapters. In first, we reconstruct the demarcation problem in Popper’s epistemology. We analyse his early reflections, exploring the emphasis given in this period to the demarcation pro-blem as essentially aiming at the separation of science and pseudocience. We then examine the de-marcation problem as it appears in the polemical exchange between Popper end logical positivists. The second chapter analyses what Kuhn has to say on the demarcation problem, and compares his thoughts to Popper’s. The third chapter presents Laudan’s main arguments against the legitimacy of the problem. The concluding section of the dissertaion maintains that: (i) Popper managed to present a legitimate philosophical problem, although his solution is not satisfactory, and (ii) Laudan was competent at laying out harsh criticisms of the demarcation problem, but was too rushed by claming its demise. The main reason for these two mistakes lies in the assumptions held by both, especially that of thinking the a satisfactory or legitimate answer to the problem must present a single criterion for scientificity.

A fim de alcançar esse objetivo, a presente dissertação está dividida em três capítulos. No primeiro, fazemos uma reconstrução do problema da demarcação na epistemologia popperiana. Analisamos suas reflexões de juventude, explorando a ênfase dada nessa fase ao problema da demarcação como um problema essencialmente voltado para a separação entre ciência e pseudociência. Num segundo momento, examinamos o problema da demarcação, tal como aparece na polêmica entre Popper e os positivistas lógicos. O segundo capítulo analisa o que Kuhn tem a dizer sobre o problema da demarcação e comparar seu pensamento a esse respeito com o de Popper. O terceiro capítulo apresenta os principais argumentos de Laudan contra a legitimidade do problema da demarcação. Ao final desta dissertação, sustenta-se as seguintes conclusões: i) Popper foi capaz de apresentar um problema filosófico legítimo, embora sua solução não constitua uma resposta satisfatória para o mesmo e ii) Laudan foi competente ao tecer duras críticas ao problema da demarcação, mas foi precipitado em afirmar seu fim. A razão principal desses equívocos encontra-se nos pressupostos assumidos por ambos os autores, especialmente o de achar que uma resposta satisfatória ou legítima ao problema precisa ser monocriterial.Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPqporUniversidade Federal de Santa MariaCentro de Ciências Sociais e HumanasPrograma de Pós-Graduação em FilosofiaUFSMBrasilFilosofiaAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessKarl PopperThomas KuhnLarry LaudanProblema da demarcaçãoCritério de demarcaçãoKarl PopperThomas KuhnLarry LaudanDemarcation problemDemarcation criterionCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::FILOSOFIAO problema da demarcação em Popper, Kuhn e LaudanThe problem of demarcation in Popper, Kuhn e Laudaninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisSautter, Frank Thomashttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2804652028967760Severo, Rogério Passoshttp://lattes.cnpq.br/0584528242177559Brzozowski, Jerzy Andréhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/7938441548737592Sartori, Carlos Augustohttp://lattes.cnpq.br/6830220445412069http://lattes.cnpq.br/6750241474649740Carvalho, Robson Rodrigues7001000000046007b4df9b2-c023-4806-81a9-f4f3371e55181eaf77a1-b455-42ee-b66a-7016a21ee730aefb0d30-83ba-4010-93a6-450f65e4b08ef0361407-b998-415a-8335-b29ffca416a6420dd786-5b10-4117-a3b4-a2cabe1b2830reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações do UFSMinstname:Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM)instacron:UFSMCC-LICENSElicense_rdflicense_rdfapplication/rdf+xml;
