Resumo: The struggle of the Social Sciences area in becoming an institution is historical, the obstacle in obtaining the same recognition of areas such as Mathematics or Medicine is not new. Thus, this research intends to seek reasons for this difficulty, trying to analyze the relations between the periodicity of Sociology as a discipline of Brazilian Education system, the territorial-temporal dispersion of graduation school in Social Sciences in Brazil, the coverage of Social Sciences area in university education in Rio Grande do Sul and the formative path of the teachers who teach these subjects. Some theoretical, historical and methodological issues of the research are discussed, such as a historical resumption of Social Sciences as a high school subject, a reflection on the meaning and role of the university, on the profession of Social Sciences teacher and its field , in addition to questions about the constitution of the Social Sciences, their development in Brazil and their representative bodies. Finally, data on Social Science disciplines in undergraduate courses at federal universities in Rio Grande do Sul are presented, as well as data on the t r a i n i n g t r a j e c t o r y o f p r o f e s s o r s w h o t e a c h t h e s e d i s c i p l i n e s .

Assim, esta pesquisa pretende buscar razões para essa dificuldade, procurando analisar as relações entre a periodicidade das Ciências Sociais no Ensino Médio brasileiro, a dispersão território-temporal dos cursos de graduação em Ciências Sociais no Brasil, a abrangência da área de Ciências Sociais no ensino superior do Rio Grande do Sul e a trajetória formativa dos professores que lecionam tais disciplinas. Discorre-se sobre algumas questões teóricas, históricas e metodológicas da pesquisa, tais como uma retomada histórica das Ciências Sociais como disciplina do ensino médio, uma reflexão sobre o sentido e o papel da universidade, sobre a profissão de professor de Ciências Sociais e seu campo, além de questões sobre a constituição das Ciências Sociais, seu desenvolvimento no Brasil e seus órgãos representativos.
