The objective was to evaluate the reduction of the level of urea in chopped sugarcane below 1% to crossbred low producing cows on consumption, performance, nutritional parameters and economic viability. Eight crossbred cows (Holstein x Gyr) with initial average body weight of 454±64 kg, 60±22 days postpartum and with average production of 7±2.5 kg of milk were used. The eight cows were distributed in two Latin squares 4 x 4, in which they were used four levels of urea: ammonium sulphate (9:1) on sugarcane (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0% w/w as fed basis), mineral salt and water free choice. The results were analyzed statistically at 5% significance of error type I. Consumption and digestibility of all components were not influenced by treatments, except for the crude protein. The feed efficiency, milk production and composition were not influenced by treatments. The efficiency of the use of crude protein was significantly improved with reduction in the level of urea in sugarcane. The BUN and MUN were significantly lower for the lower levels of urea. There were costs decrease as the level of urea was reduced in sugarcane. The daily profits were higher when the daily weight variation was not considered in economic analysis. The best economic return happened by the level of 0.50% of urea on sugarcane.
