The Brazilian countryside undergoes a moment of important changes in relation to the people s lifestyles living in rural areas. In that sense, there is a challenge to be investigated about the impact that the countryside urbanization process may have on the families lifestyles residing in this space regarding housing modalities and consumption habits. This research aimed to understand the influences of countryside urbanization process on housing modalities and consumption habits of families living in rural area. Indications of possible transformations in that space were analyzed considering "traditional rural lifestyles to modernity" which may be expressed in the housing modalities and consumption habits; so, it could be observed how the proximity between city and countryside lifestyle would manifest. Rural area of Araponga municipality was taken as reference for having typical socioeconomic characteristics of Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This is a descriptive research with combination of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches using primary and secondary sources and semi-structured questionnaires applied to 72 families, documentary data based on photographic record, audios, and observations of nonparticipant people. Results showed interference of urbanization indicators in lifestyle with respect to consumption patterns and housing modalities, technological apparatus, and access to services among the studied families. However, indicators that were related to years of education, income, relationship with the work, accomplishing tasks, and issues related to leisure received influence from the rural lifestyle. It was noted that rural families began to acquire and absorb new consumer values and characteristics of urban patterns filtered by a set of cultural specificities rooted in their history and lifestyle, without, however, losing their cultural identity. This fact was showed by persistent characteristics of identity as typical of a traditional rural lifestyle, for example, domestic labor in which the woman was the person in charge of developing activities related to the home environment. Also, activities of artisanal production as cleaning products such as soap or even objects of decorative use demonstrated the persistence of tradition, whose values were still being kept. It is concluded that the urbanization process has brought changes, even though partial, on rural families lifestyles and consumption habits by appropriation of urban culture. This process took place, though, without fully disfiguring rural culture. That is, families residing in the countryside were not totally independent of consuming desires that the market offers and that are manifested by lifestyles, technological apparatus, and access to goods and services.
