Resumo: | Use of ozone enriched air (O3) has been considered as one of the major alternatives for controlling insect pests of stored products. Although the toxic effects of ozone on insects are already known, there is little information about its effects on insect pest behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the locomotor behavior of Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in response to sub-lethal ozone concentrations, establish relationships between behavioral and physiological patterns of populations and evaluate the risk of development of resistance to the fumigant. The results indicated that none of the S. zeamais populations in study were resistant to ozone. Locomotor behavior of insects in response to ozone varied among the populations proportionally to locomotor behavior in the lack of the gas. Some populations had reduced locomotor activity when exposed to ozone, indicating a stimulus-dependent response. Locomotor activity of insects in response to increasing ozone concentrations was found to be dependent on the population and the sex. In general, reduction in locomotor activity was more pronounced in female insects, although locomotor behavior is specific to each population. In conclusion, selection for ozone resistance was not possible in populations of S. zeamais subjected to successive selection cycles. |
