Análise citogenética e morfométrica em populações de Rhinella pombali (Baldissera Jr., Caramaschi e Haddad, 2004) e Rhinella crucifer (Wied- Neuwied, 1821) (Anura, Bufonidae)

Rhinella pombali is a species recently separated from R. crucifer, and considered restricted to the state of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. Although their systematics was recently revised, it remains some taxonomic and geographical inconsistencies, due mainly to morphological variation of the R. crucifer group. We described the karyotypes (conventional staining, C and NOR-banding of Rhinella crucifer and R. pombali, two species of the R. crucifer group. Both species had diploid number 2n=22, characteristic of the family Bufonidae. Blocks of constitutive heterochromatin were centromeric, and occasional interstitial C-bands were observed in some chromosomes. NORs were located in the short arm of chromosome seven, as observed in R. ornata and other South American species of Rhinella. For the morphometric study, we analyzed the external morphology and 25 morphometrical characters of specimens of R. pombali, distributed in 10 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) to verify the interpopulational variation of this species and detect possible variations along geographical gradients. Sexually dimorphic traits were also included. The analysis of regional aspects of simpatry between R. pombali and other species of the R. crucifer group in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states, led to some inconsistencies for the expected geographical distribution of taxonomic characters. The results indicate the existence of high level of morphometrical sexual dimorphism and some morphological differences between males and females. The analyses of the 10 OTUs showed absence of significant levels of differentiation among them.
