Resumo: The bean breeding aiming to produce more upright architecture plants comes growing in importance based on four main objectives: to attend the demand of the producer of irrigated areas in relation to the possibility of mechanical harvesting; to attenuate the problems of diseases caused by soil fungi, especially the white mold; to facilitate the cultural practices and reduce the risks of cultivation in the rainy season. Currently, a grading scale is being used to evaluate the architecture of plant bean, however, this scale is subjective, demands hard work and relies an extensive experience of the evaluator. Therefore, it is important for bean breeding programs to identify characters with the potential to support or even replace, the assessment of plant architecture by notes, seeking greater efficiency in the selection of upright plants. Aiming to identify effective indicators of plant architecture, thirty-six bean lines were evaluated for key traits related to plant architecture and agronomic traits in two seasons, winter of 2007 and winter of 2009. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with three repetition at Coimbra’s Experimental Station, belonging to the Department of Plant Science, Universidade Federal de Viçosa. It was observed that more erect plants had a higher cycle, higher at harvest time, smaller insertion angle of branches, epicotyl and hypocotyls with larger diameter, higher height of first pod, pods concentrated on the main stem and a greater number of internodes on the main stem. By path analysis, it was observed that the insertion angle of branches, plant height at harvest and the diameter of the hypocotyl were the main determinants of character architecture of bean plants. Hypocotyl diameter showed a strong association of cause and effect with note plant architecture, high accuracy and precision in its evaluation and ease of evaluation. Moreover, its evaluation is not subjective, can be taken for individual plants within plots, the evaluation can be done after harvest and requires only six measures to access the genotypic value of lineages. Thus, the diameter of the hypocotyl stood out as an effective indicator of the bean plant architecture.
