Herpetofauna da Serra do Brigadeiro, um remanescente de Mata Atlântica em Minas Gerais, sudeste do Brasil

This paper presents new data on the biology and diversity of herpetofauna at the Serra do Brigadeiro moutain, Atlantic Forest in northern Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range, southeastern Brazil. Highlights in this region the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park, a conservation unit with approximately 15,000 hectares in the municipalities of Araponga, Divino, Ervália, Fervedouro, Miradouro, Muriaé, Pedra Bonita and Sericita, state of Minas Gerais. Among the chapters approachead, data on biology, natural history and geographical distribution of 98 species of herpetofauna, 57 of frogs, caecilians, nine lizards, one amphisbenian, 29 snakes and one turtle are presented. We discuss the conservation status of rare amphibians and reptiles species, providing detailed information on the geographic distribution of those species that are important zoogeographical records from Serra do Brigadeiro mountain. It is reported the occurrence of unusual reproductive behavior of the treefrogs Scinax luizotavioi and Hyspiboas pardalis, which were recorded on several occasions using bromeliads as a reproductive site. The study highlights the register of the caecilian Luetkenotyphlus brasiliensis, presenting new meristic and morphometric data for the latter species, as well as a review of historical records of its occurrence in South America. At the end of the work are discussed topics related to conservation biology, especially regarding the use of terrestrial buffer zones surrounding wetlands by amphibians. We discuss the movement patterns, spatial distribution and temporal migration time for leaf-litter frog species. Specially for the frog Physalaemus feioi, there is strong influence of the distance from the pond edge on the abundance of adult males, while for adult females and juveniles, it appears that occupation of upland forest habitat is given in a more consistent way, with these individuals occurring in farther areas from ponds. Species not associated with lentic habitats, such as those belonging to Proceratophrys spp., apparently use the terrestrial zones surrounding wetlands as refuge, feeding and/or estivation sites. It was found that the currently terrestrial buffer zones established by law for the conservation of upland habitats surrounding wetlands are inadequate to ensure the survival and maintenance of the population dynamics of P. feioi, and probably other species with similar life history, as P. maximus and other leaf-litter frogs.
