The aim of this work was to analyze the potential for the development of the market of future contract of reforestation wood in Brazil, focusing Eucalyptus wood for wood pulp. The model developed by PENNINGS e LEUTHOLD (1999), was taken as reference which is based on the macro and micro approach to take decision on the implantation of a future contract. The data were collected through questionnaires addressed to the wood pulp companies as well as literature revision. The companies under analysis were responsible for, approximately, 82% of the national production of wood pulp of Eucalyptus in 2003. The results obtained with the analysis of the characteristics of the commodity and of the market showed that the concentration of the market and the vertical integration are the only disadvantages for the development of a future contract of wood in Brazil. However, it was verified that in spite of existing concentration and vertical integration, the value of this market is relatively high. In addition to that, the fact of concentration and integration have been reduced because of the increasingly dependence on market wood to provide companies. However, the analysis of the characteristics of the managers and the companies appeared to be favorable to the development of the referred contract, as all the managers possess prone individuals' characteristics to negotiate in exchange, as well as high education level and age below 60 years. They also reported that the companies are interested in future contract involving Brazilian wood; that they have financial support to operate in exchanges, as well as the companies are exposed to risk and that the employees almost all the companies get training activities on Economy and management. To sum up, it become dear that, in fact, there is a high potential to develop a future contract of wood in Brazil.
