The objective of this study was to analyze the contribution of coffee certification for the technical efficiency of coffee in the mountains of Minas Gerais. To achieve this goal, three methods were used: i) data envelopment analysis (DEA); ii) quantile regression, and iii) propensity score matching. The results of the analysis of technical efficiency pointed to a low technical performance of the coffee production in this region. The certification has proved to be an important factor associated with technical efficiency of large farms with high levels of efficiency, but productivity was the most frequent variable associated with technical efficiency of the coffee farms of the mountain region of Minas Gerais. The analysis showed that the certification have a negative impact on the technical efficiency of the medium size certified farms of the mountain region of Minas Gerais. However, indicated that spending on inputs from a certified farm is much higher than in a similar farm without certification. These costs associated with certification undertake technical efficiency, but work together positively to the production of coffee, especially those of better quality. Thus, as the most of the coffee is not paid by the existence of the certification label, but by its quality, we conclude that the certification contributes to improving the income of the coffee activity in the mountains region of Minas Gerais.
