The present study concerns the labor management (LM) in the Unified Health System (UHS), in Viçosa, county polo for health, located in the forest zone in the southeastern part of the state of Minas Gerais. The study is important because LM is one of the main difficulties to be faced in the city health department. Thus, the main objective was to analyze and evaluate the current process of labor management, adopted by the UHS, in Viçosa, in the year 2010. Specifically, we analyzed the Statement of Commitment of Municipal Management, signed by the mayor, to verify its application in day to day. For that, there were analyzed the expected effects as well as the effects got from the labor management process; it was verified whether resources are adequate and sufficient for the process execution retro; together with the social actors involved, and in accordance with their respective perceptions, there were collected the factors involved in the management of work in the health care system in Viçosa; also, the level of training of managers was analyzed regarding the use of management practices at work. With a predominantly qualitative approach, it was used in the content analysis of both structured interviews and documents, realizing that the Municipal Health Department of Viçosa (MHDV) still does not cover entirely the agreed items concerning labor management. However, it was found that there is great potential to reverse that percentage, being sufficient that the MHDV follows what is in Health Planning, particularly with regard to the Labor Management, making it more efficient and improving service to the population.
