This study aimed to analyze the interrelationship between poverty and environmental degradation to the municipalities of the state of Minas Gerais, in the years 2000 and 2010 . First , we sought to review the literature dealing with the theme poverty and the environment , because the theme is new and unexplored . Subsequently , we sought to identify the level of degradation and poverty of mining municipalities constructing indices of environmental degradation and poverty for these municipalities . These indices showed that Minas has serious problems related to degradation , some municipalities are even at risk of desertification . With regard to poverty , 19 municipalities miners are in extreme poverty , and many others with high levels. In addition , this study evaluated through a cluster analysis and panel data , the inter - relationship between poverty and the environment . The results showed that most of the state of Minas Gerais is with high levels of environmental degradation and at the same time, high levels of poverty , suggesting that the more degraded a municipality is greater poverty observed in the same . The Meso Jequitinhonha and North Mine stood out among those who had higher amounts of municipalities with higher levels of degradation and poverty.
