Resumo: This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility of zinc supplementation by insertion of tablets in the orthotropic branch of Coffea arabica L., verify the response of coffee tree in terms of productivity and quality of grain, evaluate the effect of doses and way of Zn supply on it and study the effect of Zn in leaf anatomical plasticity of coffee trees. To evaluate the Zn leaf content were installed two experiments in the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Experiment 1 was conducted in the area of research called "Agronomia Vale", from October 2003 to June 2005. The experimental design was a factorial 3x4, being three forms of Zn supply (T0-control, without Zn; T1-foliar application of ZnSO4 at 0,4%, T2-combination of salts 1 - containing 1,80g of zinc salts) and four cultivars of Coffea arabica L. (Acaiá IAC-474-19, Icatu Amarelo IAC-3282, Rubi MG-1192 and Catuaí Vermelho IAC-99). Experiment 2 was installed in November 2006 and accomplished until February 2009, on area of research called "Agronomia Aeroporto". In this was studied the following treatments: T0 - control, without Zn supply; T1 - ZnSO4 foliar spraying at 0,4%, T2 - combination of salts 1 (tablets containing 1,8g of salts of Zn), T3 - combination of salt 2 (tablets containing 0,5g of salts of Zn), T4 - combination of salt 2 (tablets containing 1,0g of salts of Zn), T5 - combination of salt 2 (tablets containing 3,0g of zinc salts). Combinations of salts in both experiments were provided in the form of tablets inserted in the orthotropic branch of coffee trees at 10 cm of the soil surface. In experiment 2 were also evaluated for grain yield, grain quality and the effect of Zn in the leaf plasticity. The supply of Zn in both forms, foliar spray and tablets inserted in the trunk, increased Zn leaf content. However, the tablets had the nutrient supply more regular than the foliar spray. The production and quality coffee grain, characterized by its size, percentage of Coffee Berry Borer, electric conductivity and leached potassium were also higher in treatment with Zn supply, regardless of the form of supply. Both combinations of salts had similar behavior, and the dose applied was determining to obtain the higher Zn leaf content and higher coffee yield. The supply of Zn affected leaf anatomy that under Zn deficiency increased the thickness of the leaf, the mesophyll and the spongy parenchyma. The supply of Zn by the insertion of tablets in the trunk of coffee trees proved to be a promising way to supply this element.

Para avaliação do conteúdo foliar de Zn foram instalados dois experimentos em área da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. O experimento 1 foi conduzido na área de pesquisa denominada "Agronomia Vale", no período de outubro de 2003 a junho de 2005. O ensaio foi analisado segundo um esquema fatorial 3x4 sendo o primeiro fator três formas de fornecimento de Zn (T0 - testemunha, sem fornecimento de Zn; T1 - pulverização foliar de ZnSO4 a 0,4%; T2 - combinação de sais 1 - com 1,80g de sais de Zn) e o segundo fator constituído de quatro cultivares de Coffea arabica L. (Acaiá IAC-474-19, Icatu Amarelo IAC-3282, Rubi MG-1192 e Catuaí Vermelho IAC-99). O experimento 2 foi instalado em novembro de 2006 e conduzido até fevereiro de 2009, na área de pesquisa denominada "Agronomia Aeroporto" sendo estudados os seguintes tratamentos: T0 - testemunha, sem fornecimento de Zn; T1.- pulverização foliar com ZnSO4 a 0,4%; T2 - combinação de sais 1 (comprimido com 1,8g de sais de Zn); T3 - combinação de sais 2 (comprimido com 0,5g de sais de Zn); T4 - combinação de sais 2 (comprimido com 1,0g de sais de Zn); T5 - combinação de sais 2 (comprimido com 3,0g de sais de Zn). As combinações de sais, em ambos os experimentos, foram fornecidas na forma de comprimidos inseridos no ramo ortotrópico do cafeeiro a 10 cm da superfície do solo. No experimento 2 também foram avaliados a produção de grãos, a qualidade dos grãos e o efeito do Zn na plasticidade foliar do cafeeiro. O suprimento de Zn em ambas as formas de fornecimento, pulverização foliar e comprimidos inseridos no tronco, aumentou os conteúdos foliares de Zn do cafeeiro embora os comprimidos tenham fornecido o nutriente de forma mais regular que a pulverização foliar. A produção e a qualidade dos grãos de café, caracterizada pelo seu tamanho, porcentagem de grãos brocados, condutividade elétrica e o potássio lixiviado, também foram maiores nos tratamento com fornecimento de Zn, independente da forma do fornecimento. Ambas as combinações de sais possuem comportamento semelhante, sendo a dose fornecida determinante para a obtenção do maior conteúdo foliar de Zn e maior produção de grãos. O fornecimento de Zn afetou a anatomia foliar que sob deficiência deste elemento aumentou as espessuras do limbo foliar, do mesofilo e do parênquima lacunoso.
