Resumo: Consumer demand for fresh foods has grown substantially in recent decades. However, despite these products preserve better sensory and nutritional characteristics, contamination by pathogens, such as L. monocytogenes, generates increasing concerns.Infection by this bacteria, called listeriosis, has low morbidity but high mortality, and represents a high risk to immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, elderly and children. Fresh products are considered high risk, since it does not go through steps to ensure the elimination of pathogens, in addition, are normally stored under refrigeration condition in which L. monocytogenes can multiply by providing conditions for growth protrudes in comparison to most bacteria. Given the above, the occurrence of L. monocytogenes was investigated in two fruits commonly consumed in natura: melon and jabuticaba. A total of 150 samples of melon and 60 samples jabuticaba acquired at retail in the municipality of Viçosa-MG, were subjected to laboratory analysis. Through conventional analysis using the method ISO 11290-1, 21 isolates of Listeria spp. were found in the fruits of melon, of which only 14 were confirmed by sequencing the gene. The presence of L. monocytogenes was also evaluated by the mini-VIDAS® LMO and by PCR. A strain of L. monocytogenes was found by PCR, however, this result differed from that obtained by imunoanalítico test, which indicated absence of L. monocytogenes and showed a rate of 3.12% false negative results. Serotyping of strains was performed by the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) and the serotyp identified was 1/2b one of the most associated with cases of human listeriosis in the world, suggesting the potential risk of to cause disease. The results evidence that the melon is a potential source of L. monocytogenes and that measures to control and prevent this pathogen should be adopted with greater persistence for products that are usually eaten fresh as fruit.

No entanto, apesar desses produtos preservarem melhor as características sensoriais e nutricionais, a contaminação por patógenos, como L. monocytogenes, gera preocupações crescentes. A doença infecciosa causada por esta bactéria, denominada listeriose, apresenta baixa taxa de morbidade, porém alta de mortalidade, e representa grande risco para indivíduos imunodeprimidos, gestantes, idosos e recém-nascidos. Produtos consumidos frescos são considerados de grande importância, uma vez que não passam por etapas que garantam a eliminação de patógenos, além disso, normalmente são mantidos sob refrigeração, condição na qual L. monocytogenes se multiplica, possibilitando que seu crescimento se sobressaia em relação à maioria das bactérias. Diante do exposto, a ocorrência de L. monocytogenes foi pesquisada em duas frutas que normalmente são consumidas in natura: melão e jabuticaba. O total de 150 amostras de melão e 60 de jabuticaba, adquiridas no comércio varejista do Município de Viçosa-MG, foram submetidas a análises laboratoriais. Por meio de análise convencional, utilizando a metodologia ISO 11290-1, 21 isolados de Listeria spp. foram encontrados nos frutos de melão, dos quais, somente 14 foram confirmados, por meio de sequenciamento gênico.
