Resumo: For the accomplishment of this study in the State of Acre-Western Amazonia, three approach levels were used: state, county and local (agroforest pole). The study was targeted to developing and adapting the evaluation practice and the planning of the land use, as the soil being the element of the natural resources synthesis on such a way to be associated with the traditional knowledge to obtaining the most efficient use of the land according to its agricultural or agroforest aptitude. Those actions were performed in order to reckon with a methodology that would contribute for the appropriate use of the natural resources and the maintenance of the vital functions of the ecosystems in Western Amazonia and other regions. In the main soil classes, some trenches (profiles) were opened, morphologic descriptions were accomplished and soil samples of the respective horizons were collected for the physical, chemical and mineralogical analyses. Pedologic maps were also elaborated in several scales according to the approach level and detailing need (1:250.000, 1:100.000 and 1:10.000), that in association with other thematic studies were integrated to the Geographical Information System on such way to obtaining the spatialization of the main variables and to allowing the integrated analyses of the area under study. The elaborated tool constitutes an element for searching the sustainability, where the producers, technicians and public managers transparently could make participative and democratic decisions with much higher level of success in the land use process. T study showed the possibility to integrate scales at state, county and locality levels in environmental studies that are simultaneously independent and complete each others in the sense of understanding the restrictions and the potentials of the environment. The developed methodology can also be used in other areas and territorial units, such as establishment projects, rural properties and conservation units. Though, it requires new efforts towards the accomplishment of the adaptations that are necessary to the new reality. One necessary and essential adaptation is the formation of a multidisciplinary team for developing the field work, therefore reducing the time and energy spent by the involved people, compared to the present research. The characterization of the main soil classes in different pedoenvironments in the State of Acre with the elaboration of their identification key for non- specialists users will be helpful for the better use of the natural resources and will facilitate the small farmers' actions (family agriculture), cattle farmers and the people in the forest. In addition, it is useful as subsidy for the public managers decisions at different government levels.
