Resumo: | Aging population is a world phenomenon, in which there is an increasing number of elderly in comparison to the other age groups. In Brazil and in other developing countries, this phenomenon has been occurring faster than in the developed countries. However, it can be seen that the quantitative increase of elderly takes place at the same moment when family also undergoes structural changes. The increase on elderly population challenges the family institution inasmuch as it is seen as an informal support source because of coresidence or by cession of goods and financial resources. However, it is observed that economic, social and cultural changes have placed the elderly as a possibility of support to their descendants in a temporary or perennial manner. Thus, it was aimed to answer the following questions: (1) What role does the elderly play in relation to the family social reproduction? (2) Which role does the family expect to play in relation to its elderly? (3) How does aging interfere in the dynamics and organization of the group? (4) How does the family perceive institutionalization? Therefore, the first objective of this work was to analyze the role of the elderly in the family group and how aging interferes in the dynamics and organization of family groups which have in its composition an old person. It was also aimed to analyze how the elderly perceives institutionalization. This work is a cross-sectional descriptive nature qualitative study. Data collection was done by document analysis, questionnaire and half- structuralized interviews. The research was done with 36 families with the presence of the elderly, living in Santo Antônio neighborhood, Viçosa, MG. Data obtained from the questionnaire were statistically analyzed by using the program Microsoft Office Excel 2007,whereas for the interviews it was used speech analysis. It was noted that most of the elderly studied are women at ages which characterize them as young elderly , owners of their houses, patients with chronic diseases, low educated and with per capita income that places them above poverty. It was also noted that the elderly was an important item on the composition of the family household budget and this income comes from social security and welfare through retirement, pension or social benefit. Aging is perceived from three specific themes: physiological and psychological changes, social aspects and chronological age. It was found the existence of an informal support net from the elderly to the family group, evidenced in the coresidence, children care, help on the daily life activities and instrumental outdoor activities. In the studied families, the elderly was the main provider and an authority figure in its family group. The changes accepted in the dynamics and family organization in function of aging refer to work and availability and use of the free time. It was noted that the elderly reject the idea of being institutionalized and there is the expectative of being cared by the family. Finally, it was found that among the families studied, it was not possible to establish a clear association between dependence and aging. On the contrary, the elderly plays an important role in family group social reproduction. |

Finally, it was found that among the families studied, it was not possible to establish a clear association between dependence and aging.
