Aiming to evaluate genetic potential of UFV 7 maize population three assays were accomplished at the Experimental Station of Coimbra, at Central de Experimentação, Pesquisa e Extensão do Triângulo Mineiro (CEPET) in Capinópolis and at Campus of UFV in Florestal, all belonging to UFV and located in the State of Minas Gerais. The assays were divided into two stages: obtaintion of progenies; and evaluation and selection among progenies. For evaluation of progenies, a simple lattice 10 x 10 experimental design was used. Estimates of genetic parameters, correlation and prediction of gains with selection were obtained. Direct selection for grain weight was used as selection strategy for specific adaptation in Capinópolis and Coimbra. UFV 7 population presented high productivity (9.112 kg ha-1) in Coimbra, average productivity (6.510 kg ha-1) in Capinópolis and low productivity (4.572 kg ha-1) in Florestal. In all environments the existence of genetic variability was observed for all characters. Grain weight characters was positively correlated with characters plant height and ear height, in Capinópolis, prolificacy, in Coimbra, and plant height, ear height and prolificacy, in Florestal. Intensity of selection of 20% was accomplished among the progenies. It is estimated that the selection for grain weight, will provide a gain of 1.400 kg ha-1, in Capinópolis and 1.566 kg ha-1, in Coimbra, for grain weight. It may be conclude that maize population UFV 7 has potential to be used in maize improvement programs for developing inbred lines in Capinópolis and Coimbra. It presents great agronomic adaptation in Coimbra, could be used for new selection cycles, as well as for immediate use, in this area.
