Resumo: | Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are contaminants generated by incomplete combustion of organic matter. There is great concern regarding their effects on the environment and human health. The bioavailability of PAHs has significant consequences for human beings, since these compounds affect ecosystems and, in particular, the food chain. Precise determination of the effects of contaminants on individual species, populations, communities and ecosystems is limited by uncertainties in the quantification of exposure of receptors. To date, there is not a uniform strategy for assessing the bioavailability of contaminants to soil organisms, despite the development of several approaches, concepts and methods. In this work we selected six soils from various regions of the Minas Gerais state, Brazil, with different chemical and physical characteristics. The soils were used to study: a) the extraction of phenanthrene from the soils after 5 and 120 of contamination time using three extractors (HPCD, TENAX-TA, and WATER), defining the relationship between added and extracted phenanthrene, in each contact time; b) the influence of soil characteristics on the extractability of phenanthrene by the extractors; c) the phenanthrene effect on soil biological indicators in both contact times, defining the first phenanthrene concentration that caused effect on the organisms; d) phenanthrene sorption curves in the 6 soils, in HPCD solution; e) the development of methodology to determine the phenanthrene supernatant, after soil contact with phenanthrene in HPCD solution, correlating the phenanthrene concentrations recovered in sorption tests with the characteristics of the soils. The concentration of phenanthrene in the HPCD solution that showed the highest correlation with soil characteristics was then correlated with the phenanthrene extracted by the 3 extraction methods and concentration of biological responses obtained with soils contaminated with phenanthrene for 5 and 120 days. As a result, we proposed a new methodology to assess the retention capacity of phenanthrene by different types of soil, named Remaining- Phenanthrene. According to this methodology, the effects of soil properties on the extraction efficiency of the method proposed and on the bioavailability of the contaminant were eliminated, making the method applicable to a variety of soils or solid wastes. |
