The dairy value chain of Brazil has fundamental importance for the country, in view of its contribution to economic and social development, generating income, tax revenues and employment. Due to the strong competition of the Brazilian dairy sector, actions that promote the competitiveness of firms and ensure operational efficiency, such as greater control over logistics, are increasingly necessary. This study aimed to assess the logistical performance of the dairy industry, considering its structure and the utilization of information technology, as well as the supply chain management and distribution systems. A multiple-case study of dairy companies in the State of Minas Gerais and a survey of logistical service providers in the country were conducted. The dairy companies studied were selected from a recent diagnostic appraisal of the state s dairy industry, based on the criteria of size and logistics organization. The selection of logistic service companies was based on their degree of specialization on refrigerated food products. Data collection at the dairy firms was done through direct visits, in which their main executives were interviewed. Logistics companies answered a questionnaire via e-mail or telephone interviews. The evaluation of logistical performance was based on logistic indicators from Fawcett and Clinton s performance appraisal model. The results showed that most of the companies appraised have difficulties in the milk collection and distribution of products, with inefficiencies that lead to increased costs, lower quality of service and reduced competitiveness. The survey among logistics providers yielded information related to their organization, the importance of information technology, the skills and educational level of employees, which allowed the proposal of performance improvement strategies focusing on the dairy industry. Among the proposals to increase the competitiveness of the dairy sector, imparting greater dynamism and efficiency in the logistics process, are the formation of consortia of dairy products for the joint collection of milk, the creation of shared distribution centers shared, the set-up of logistics information control structures, the establishment of cost control systems and the promotion of capacity build ling of dairy company employees in the area of logistics. The study concluded that the use of integrated logistics as a way to achieve competitive advantage is not yet a reality in the dairy sector of Minas Gerais State; there is still a long way to go for those who want to benefit from logistical excellence as a driver of competitiveness.
