The initial part of this work directed to the study of soils in geotechnical subgrades of unpaved roads, aiming to identify them as geotechnical classifications: USCS (Unified Soil Classification System), TRB (Transportation Research Board System) and MCT Methodology (Miniature, Compact, Tropical). The analysis of these classifications contributed to the generation of a set of geotechnical data of reference on tropical soils and has found groups of geotechnical traditional systems of classification and methodology MCT. Mechanical testing was also performed in these soils for the evaluation of its support conditions which allowed comparing their potential for resistance with the aforementioned classifications geotechnical. Also evaluate the efficiency of some methods of functional classification of unpaved roads in several road sections of unpaved roads the road network in the municipal district of Viçosa-MG. Still, it was presented and tested a method of functional assessment that was more property conditions of use of the road sections above, which contributed to the design of a model of management of maintenance. Similarly, was analyzed the influence of axle load and tire pressure, representative of commercial traffic on a typical pavement structure of vicinal roads. In this structure, were investigated the recovered surface deflections and the strains upright in the top of the subgrade. Finally, a study on the use of geographical information systems (GIS) to support management of maintenance of unpaved roads, was conducted covering the following topics: (i) the possibility of using this technique for assessing the serviceability unpaved roads and (ii) storage of information generated in GIS environment in order to facilitate the handling, processing, visualization and analysis of data collected for decision making in planned.
