Systematics is a science which studies the diversity of organism forms promoting the collection of information and providing a prognosis of the distribution of traits among organisms. The spermatozoa posses diverse morphologies which can be used for distinction of taxa and in phylogenic analyses since these cells can vary in form, size and ultrastructurs, principally between different taxa. When these variations occur within the same species, it is treated as a phenomenon called polymorphism. In this study, the occurrence of polymorphic spermatozoa was verified in the Triatoma brasiliensis, T. vitticeps, Rhodnius nasutus e R. neglectus and the ultrastructure of spermatozoa from T. vitticeps were characterized. For this procedure, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were utilized. In the Triatominae studied here, two types of spermatozoa were encountered, differentiated by their total and nuclear lengths. The ultrastructural analysis of spermatozoa from Triatoma vitticeps indicates various synapomorphic traits for Heteroptera such as: (1) the axoneme partially covered by two mitochondrial derivatives, (2) the presence of two anchor shaped structure, connecting each mitochondrial derivatives to the intertubular material and (3) the occurrence of two paracrystalline bodies in each mitochondrial derivatives. These characteristics can certainly be used for phylogenic studies of the order Hemiptera.
